Project Description

Located on Granite, Grey, Kirkup, and RED Mountains in Rossland, a former gold mining town in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia, lies RED Mountain Resort. The ski resort is the first stop along the famous “Powder Highway” and delivers 2,877 lift-serviced acres (4,200 total) of pristine skiing.

In 2004, the RED Mountain Ventures confirmed their 15-20 year master plan which included constructing up to 1,400 on-mountain dwelling units and 70,000 square feet of commercial space. Nearly $8 million was invested on the initial development area, which includes new roads in and around the base are and 11 lots which now contain, Slalom Creek, Morning Star, TMP and Hotel developments.

To support their development planning, RED Mountain Resort needed LiDAR and Orthophotography services for time-sensitive applications. GeoVerra successfully provided the resort with quick-turnaround LiDAR surveys, which covered swaths of challenging and mountainous terrain, on-time and under budget.

Why GeoVerra – Trusted, Responsive, Reliable Solutions

RED Mountain Resort lies on unique and challenging terrain and with their development planning having timely deadlines, they needed a time sensitive solution. Manned LiDAR operations can be expensive to mobilize, and often need to be scheduled weeks, or months in advance, with deliverables often taking six to eight weeks to prepare. Conventional surveys were simply not a feasible option for covering the amount of terrain required, in the short amount of time provided.

With access to the most advanced geospatial technology, GeoVerra’s non-invasive solutions produce precise, reliable data in a fraction of the time and cost of traditional survey methods. Using advanced LiDAR and Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), GeoVerra produced high-definition surveys across large complex and hazardous areas while keeping everyone out of harms way. The requested data was captured, mobilized and delivered to the client in less than 10 business days.

Outcome

Working with RED Mountain Resort on this project was both challenging and extremely rewarding.  The capabilities of our advanced LiDAR and RPAS platforms really shined on this project, allowing us to deliver a high-quality product on time, and under budget.  We look forward to working with RED Mountain in the future as development progresses.”

Andrew Hill, Project Coordinator, LSIT, GeoVerra

The GeoVerra team was terrific to work with! They were eager to assist in gathering the exact data we needed to in order to update our master plan thus allowing us to make informed decisions in a timely manner.   GeoVerra provided us with a LiDAR survey that has proven to be the exact tool we needed as we move into the detailed design phase of master plan implementation.”

Christine, Director of Planning and Development, RED Mountain Resort
