Trans Mountain Reactivation

The Trans Mountain Reactivation Project (under the direction of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project) is a high-profile pipeline integrity and pipeline replacement operation conducted by Simpcw Ledcor LTD Partnership. The Project is to carry out necessary pipe repair and replacement on portions of Trans Mountain’s original 1,150 km of pipeline running from Edmonton, AB to Burnaby, BC. At this time, the work is currently taking place between Hinton, AB and Black Pines, BC.

• Trans Mountain has completed expansion projects since the original pipeline became operational. As a result, some sections are already twinned. The twinned sections have an active pipeline and a deactivated segment of pipeline.

• To complete the full twinning of the pipeline system, Trans Mountain will reactivate two pipeline segments.

• GeoVerra is completing integrity dig surveys in these reactivation areas and throughout the existing Trans Mountain Pipeline system in both British Columbia and Alberta.

• Reactivation site surveys will be ongoing into 2023.

Primary Services

Pre-Construction Surveys

•GeoVerra has completed preliminary surveys for the reactivation dig locations, including legal ties to determine the right of way (ROW), crossing profile surveys, and topographic surveys. In addition, staking, flagging and sweeping of the ROW where dig site activities are intended to commence and refreshing areas currently active.

Construction As-Built

•As-built construction surveys of pipe replacement portions are ongoing in Alberta and British Columbia. They include assisting in ditch engineering, as-built the pipe, construction appurtenances, and recording final grade. As-built construction surveys of access ramps and laydown areas with on-the-fly field fit engineering adapted to client specifications and requirements are ongoing throughout the Project.


•Dig site plans have been prepared using legal survey evidence and topographic information collected in the field and site-specific access maps for the various sites throughout the Project. This allows GeoVerra to better assist the reactivation team in acquiring all third-party crossings and proximity agreements necessary.

•Stakeout Reports have been prepared and are kept current for all active reactivation work sites. The reports include sweeping and locating results and documentation and a sketch of the location. The stakeout reports are also used by the client to aid in fulfilling its One Call Ticket Requirements.
