From Data to Decisions: How GeoVerra’s GIS Tools Empower Smarter Projects

Edmonton, AB (November 19, 2025) – GIS Day gives us a chance to highlight the powerful role geospatial data plays in shaping safe, efficient and well-informed projects across Canada. At GeoVerra, our GIS team transforms complex spatial information into clear, actionable insights that help clients make confident decisions from planning through to execution.

How GIS Supports Smarter Projects

GIS brings together maps, imagery, survey data, land information and environmental layers to answer questions that matter on real projects. This includes identifying the most efficient routes, understanding risks, coordinating construction activities and giving stakeholders a clear picture of what is happening on the ground. For clients in energy, utilities, transportation, industrial development and community projects, these insights support stronger planning and safer operations.

What Our GIS Team Delivers

The team produces a wide range of high-quality mapping products such as integrity access maps, OSE exploration maps, BCER maps and many other specialized deliverables that support daily operations and long-term planning. Beyond map production, the team also maintains the systems and automations that keep more than four hundred GIS data layers current and accessible. These layers are used by hundreds of employees across the company through GV CAD, GV View and the Data Portal, ensuring that staff and clients always have access to accurate and up to date information.

Real Value for Clients

GIS plays an essential role in route selection for linear infrastructure, emergency response planning, Indigenous partnership support and monitoring work on complex multi stakeholder projects. By combining spatial data from many sources into one clear picture, our GIS tools help reduce field time, avoid conflicts, improve communication and keep projects moving forward.

Example Project: Toronto Water Watermain Rehabilitation Program

  • Eight year program running from 2015 to 2023 supporting cathodic protection and structural lining for watermains
  • Approximately three hundred maps produced each year for both cathodic protection and structural lining
  • GIS team delivered a web portal during the first four years that provided access to watermains, related assets and data such as curb stops
  • Completed a city wide NDVI analysis in the first year using near infrared imagery to identify vegetation and hard surfaces above watermains
  • NDVI insights helped the engineering team select appropriate watermain candidates for rehabilitation
